The Common Core Framework

The Common Core recommends that K-12 develop 6-week units. You will no longer be teaching standards and indicators in isolation or as independent skills, instead all of the skills will be intertwined together. NOTHING is taught in isolation.

Since everyone will be integrating nonfiction reading (science and social studies), each grade level needs to come up with themes. Similar to models below.

As a group (or break into smaller groups if your group is too large,) consider what science and social studies standards will need to be included as well as the ELA standards. Use this information to brainstorm 6 possible themes as well as the content topics that could be incorporated into that theme. (This is not going to be written in stone at this time, we are just looking for ideas.) For MS/HS - this may take a discussion with those teachers of those subjects to get content topics, but you can also think of some of the books you read to get ideas for themes.

For example:
Theme: "Winds of Change"
Content Topics: weather, democracy, underground railroad, growing up, new friends, energy, technology, natural resources, seasons, fall colors, transportation, shadows, forms of water, pioneers (then and now)

Does this get you thinking?

Have 1 person from each team submit your 6 themes using the link below.
